The Lindacrest Drive Residence presented a unique design challenge. The site is narrow at the street frontage and tapers outward as it descends a steep hillside overlooking Beverly Hills. Restrictions on the buildable area for such a property are prohibitive to growing families. Therefore, finding a design solution to overcome this obstacle was primary to meeting our client's needs. In addition, exercises in generating potential spatial configurations on the site showed a necessary verticality in the home's massing. Considering the needs of our client and the site's conditions, our design process led us to a strategy of volumetric shifting of the spaces at each level. That decision simultaneously allowed for the expansion of interior spaces and the recapturing of usable exterior space, which had once been steep hillsides. This allows each floor level to have unique exterior space that extends interior spaces outward to city and canyon vistas.
